【Innovation Conference】Minshen Shares: Opportunities and Challenges of Independent and Controllable MEMS

The first Integrated Circuit Design Innovation Application Conference, "2021 China Integrated Circuit Design Innovation Conference and IC Application Expo" (ICDIA for short), concluded successfully in Suzhou.

The conference, themed "Application Leading, Innovation Driving," was guided by the China Integrated Circuit Innovation Alliance and the Suzhou Municipal People's Government and jointly hosted by the China Integrated Circuit Design Innovation Alliance, the Suzhou High-tech Zone Management Committee, and others. More than 10 industry leaders and more than 60 corporate experts shared innovative ideas and technological achievements, with more than 1,000 representatives from related enterprises in attendance. It can be said that the scale was grand and the content substantial, leaving participants with a lingering aftertaste.

Li Yaping, Deputy Secretary of the Suzhou Municipal Committee and Mayor; Ye Tianchun, Vice President and Secretary-General of the China Integrated Circuit Innovation Alliance; Sun Quan, Director of the Department of Major Projects, Ministry of Science and Technology; Chi Yu, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology; Ni Hanyi, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Shen Mi, Deputy Mayor of Suzhou; Jiang Hua, Deputy Secretary-General of the Suzhou Municipal Government; Zhang Dongchi, Director of the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology; and Jin Xiaohu, Deputy Director of the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, and other leaders attended the event.

As a leading enterprise in China's MEMS industry, Zhang Chenliang, Deputy General Manager of Minshen Shares, was invited to give a keynote report on "Opportunities and Challenges of Independent and Controllable MEMS."

First, Zhang Chenliang introduced the history, industrial characteristics, and development status of MEMS. He stated that from 2015 to 2025, the global MEMS industry will maintain a high growth rate, with China's 20% growth rate significantly outpacing the global 15% growth rate. In terms of devices, "radio frequency," "microphones," and "thermoelectric piles" are the fastest-growing.

At the same time, Zhang Chenliang pointed out that compared to the semiconductor industry's sales exceeding US$400 billion annually, the MEMS industry, which is still in its early stages, only has a scale of US$15 billion. However, from the earliest pressure sensors to inertial sensors, gyroscope sensors, and microphones that emerged around 2002, the continuous landing of new technologies has continuously given birth to new products, which will support the high-speed growth of the MEMS industry for a long time.

Looking at the top ten manufacturers globally in terms of revenue, foreign giants still occupy the absolute share, but Zhang Chenliang believes that the development of Chinese enterprises is opportune:

  • In 2021, the MEMS industry was included as a key development direction in the "14th Five-Year Plan" outline of the country;

  • MEMS is a sunrise industry in a rapid growth phase.

  • MEMS New technologies are constantly emerging, and new products are constantly being launched, entering the stage of large-scale commercial production.

  • Domestic MEMS industrial chains are gradually improving, and the momentum of domestic substitution is strong.

In China's "14th Five-Year Plan" and the 2035 long-term goals outline, integrated circuits are listed as one of the key areas for technological breakthroughs. As a special process for integrated circuits, MEMS is also specifically mentioned. According to authoritative statistics, in 2020, there were 116 investment and merger cases in the domestic MEMS field, with a total amount of 34.7 billion yuan, showing an explosive growth trend.

Zhang Chenliang introduced that Minshen was founded in 2007, is a pioneer in China's MEMS industry, a witness to its development from scratch, and a leading builder of a localized full industrial chain.

Looking back at the bumpy development path of China's MEMS industry, he emotionally said at the meeting, "Minshen's development trajectory has been in sync with the pulse of China's MEMS development. After more than ten years of research and development, we have overcome the predicament of starting from scratch and eight years of losses, and finally have independently developed MEMS/ASIC chip MEMS silicon microphones, pressure sensors, and accelerometer product lines with our own intellectual property rights. This is a complete localized industrial chain."

From imitation and following, to catching up and running side-by-side, Minshen has achieved surpassing and leading.

Accumulating strength and achieving great things.

In Zhang Chenliang's view, one of Minshen's major contributions is to explore a complete path of localization for China's MEMS industry. Its strong development resilience benefits from its long-term layout in the field of independent and controllable full industrial chains.

In 2016, Minshen's cumulative shipment of MEMS sensors exceeded 100 million units, exceeding 500 million units in 2018, and exceeding 1 billion units in 2020. With the help of capital and years of technological accumulation, Minshen Shares is continuously strengthening its product layout, building a MEMS technology platform enterprise, and leading China's MEMS industry to strive for greater heights.

Zhang Chenliang objectively pointed out, in the face of the rapidly approaching opportunities, China's MEMS industry still needs to face five major challenges:

  • The domestic MEMS industry has a weak foundation, and the industrial chain has just entered a period of rapid growth;

  • The characteristics of MEMS technology are that each product has a unique process, and production is highly customized;

  • A business model suitable for IDM vertical integration requires large investments;

  • Domestic MEMS industrial chains are gradually improving, and the momentum of domestic substitution is strong, but there is a problem of speed versus quality;

  • The overall market is currently relatively small, and some areas in the primary market have already seen overheated investment.

At the end of the report, Zhang Chenliang emphasized that while the semiconductor industry is booming, the industry and the capital market still need to maintain calmness, rationality, and vision. The "pond" of the segmented market is limited and cannot support too many "fish." If some products continue to receive overheated investment, it will inevitably lead to vicious competition and industry involution. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce speculative thinking, avoid blind investment and following trends, maintain clear judgment, and adhere to the principle of "making chips with craftsmanship."
