ChipChina Webinar | Minsheng Holdings: Application of MEMS Pressure Sensors in E-cigarettes

On the afternoon of the 29th, Hu Wei, Deputy General Manager of R&D at Minsin, was invited to attend the 5th ChipChina Webinar, delivering a keynote speech titled "Application of MEMS Pressure Sensors in E-cigarettes," focusing on Minsin's optimized MEMS pressure sensor solutions.

About ChipChina Webinar

Themed "MEMS Manufacturing Technology Development Forum - Integrating the Industrial Chain and Breaking Through Manufacturing Challenges for New MEMS Products," this conference brought together representatives from R&D labs, foundries, IDMs, and packaging and testing companies to share and discuss innovative perspectives, technical theories, and opportunities and challenges in a three-hour meeting.

The father of modern e-cigarettes is Chinese.

In 1963, American Herbert A. Gilbert patented a "smokeless, non-tobacco cigarette," marking the emergence of the e-cigarette concept.

In 2003, Han Li, a Chinese pharmacist, invented and successfully produced and sold the first e-cigarette.

E-cigarettes are a type of novel tobacco product that does not contain harmful components such as tar and suspended particles, reducing the user's exposure to various toxic substances and carcinogens produced by burning cigarettes. In recent years, user penetration rates have steadily increased and gradually expanded from first-tier cities to third- and fourth-tier cities.

When a user inhales an e-cigarette, the airflow sensor detects the inhalation action, causing the heating wire to heat the e-liquid in the cartridge, atomizing the e-liquid, which enters the mouth with the airflow, simulating the effect of smoking.

The airflow sensor is one of the core components of e-cigarettes. The current mainstream solution is a capacitive microphone. It has mature technology and low cost, making it the preferred solution for most e-cigarette manufacturers, but its shortcomings are gradually becoming apparent with product development.

About Minsin's Overall Solution

Hu Wei introduced that with the rapid expansion of the industry scale and the continuous acceleration of product iteration, it objectively attracts more manufacturers to enter the market. Against this backdrop of huge demand, Minsin, with its leading MEMS technology solutions, has entered the e-cigarette industry, bringing about creativity, selection, and disruption, further promoting the healthy development of the e-cigarette industry.

Hu Wei stated that the MEMS pressure sensor is one of the optimal solutions for achieving suction switching in e-cigarettes. When a pressure difference occurs between the inside of the e-cigarette body and atmospheric pressure, the MEMS pressure sensor can detect the pressure value to control the usage state of the e-cigarette.

Minsin's AFM overall solution is based on a single device.

  • A single differential pressure sensor achieves suction detection;
  • One side of the device diaphragm contacts the airflow channel,
  • The other side contacts atmospheric pressure, and is waterproof and oil-proof;
  • Multiple output interfaces: interrupt, frequency, I2C.

Advantages of Minsin's Gas Flow Measurement Solution

  • Low cost: single-chip differential pressure detection, more compact overall design;
  • Oil resistance: using back-intake method, waterproof and oil-proof;
  • Consistency: MEMS micron-level processing technology, small device differences,
  • And pre-calibration testing ensures consistent triggering pressure.

Minsin Deputy General Manager of R&D Hu Wei stated Currently, Minsin's MEMS pressure sensors are being supplied to high-end e-cigarette brands, and it is the first to develop chips including flow meters and flow switches globally, achieving comprehensive coverage of the high, medium, and low-end e-cigarette market. Minsin has an inherent DNA of independence and localization, possessing a local MEMS full industrial chain, ensuring cost management and timely delivery while maintaining excellent quality.
