Minsheng Shares: The Application of MEMS Sensors in Electronic Cigarettes
E-cigarettes and MEMS
E-cigarettes do not contain harmful components such as tar and suspended particles. With the improvement of people's health awareness, smoking e-cigarettes is becoming a trend. Furthermore, e-cigarette oils can be flavored by adding different components, and users can choose the flavor of the e-liquid according to their preferences.
MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) generally refers to a microelectromechanical system, which is a precision micro-processing carried out at the micrometer level to produce various types of microsensors and microactuators. The pressure sensor is one of the earliest sensors to appear and be applied in MEMS sensors. In terms of detection principles, it is mainly divided into piezoresistive type and capacitive type. Both use silicon materials to create micrometer-level pressure-sensitive diaphragms through pattern transfer and etching methods.
E-cigarette Microphone
Currently, most e-cigarette products on the market use microphones as pressure switches. Microphones are inexpensive, but there are some pain points in their use that need to be addressed.
Consistency:
-
Multiple parts are assembled, resulting in assembly tolerances and inconsistent triggering pressure.
Oil Resistance:
-
E-liquid or water vapor entering the gap between the capacitive diaphragms causes performance degradation and, in severe cases, failure.
SMT Compatibility:
-
Manual soldering is required, and high soldering skills are needed, which affects production capacity.

Single-Chip Solution
-
Single-chip differential pressure sensor for suction detection
-
One side of the device diaphragm is in contact with the airflow channel, and the other side is in contact with atmospheric pressure; it is waterproof and oil-proof.
-
Multiple output interfaces: interrupt, frequency, I 2 C

Advantages over traditional microphones
-
Low cost: single-chip differential pressure detection, more compact overall design
-
Oil resistance: using a back-intake method, waterproof and oil-proof
-
Consistency: MEMS micrometer-level processing technology, small device differences, and factory calibration testing ensure consistent triggering pressure.
